Thousands of people gathered in DC on Saturday for the 15th annual Light the Night Walk. Fox 5 was a proud sponsor of the event, which raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (L.L.S.). Participents holding illuminated balloons walked from Freedom Plaza, to the U.S. Capitol and back.
Organizers say there are a million Americans living with or in remission from blood cancers. There are about 20,000 in the DC area alone. The Fox 5 news team lost one co-worker to a blood cancer, and has three others currently being treated or in remission.
Assistant News Director Margie Ruttenberg has been battling recurrent hodgkin's lymphoma for the past four years. She said of the L.L.S., "They fund research that is saving lives. If it weren't for a new drug I went on in 2011, I wouldn't be here talking to you."
When added to funds raised at earlier walks in Maryland and Virginia, the group is projected to cross the finish line with $2.5 million raised in the DC region in 2013.
