PHOENIX -

A 2-year-old boy has been transported to the hospital in critical condition after being found in a backyard pool.

According to the Phoenix Fire department, a 23-year-old woman was babysitting a group of preteen girls who were having a sleepover at a house near 19th Ave and Union Hills.

The babysitter had her 2-year-old son with her.

The latch on the pool gate was broken, and the little boy somehow made his way to the back and fell into the pool. He was submerged for up to 15 minutes.

"Unbeknownst to the 23-year-old mother that the latch was missing on the pool fence, the little toddler just running around chasing a 13-year-old," said Phoenix Fire Capt. Tony Mure.

"There was a 15-minute window where mom had not seen the 2-year-old and was assuming he was with the 13-year-olds... found her son face down in the pool."

The woman rescued the baby from the pool and administered CPR. Paramedics continued CPR when they arrived.

The people who rented the house said they had put in a request to have the gate latch fixed just last week.
