Volunteers help clean up Goodyear church hit by vandals

Posted: Updated:

A Goodyear church was targeted by vandals this week. The suspects caused more than $20,000 in damage.

We're getting our first look at some of the damage done to the church.

The vandals spray-painted hurtful words and symbols on the walls of the church. This is one of the few pictures we can actually show you.

Vandals hit Desert Springs Community Church, spray-painting the hallways and tearing out part of a wall. And the vandals didn't stop there.

"They stole some things, they took some things, but everything is just building and property and everything can be replaced," says Marc Riddle of Desert Springs Community Church.

Church computers were also stolen -- but that didn't stop from church members from getting the word out on social media.

One day later hundreds showed up to help.

"Older, young people with their kids, just everybody ready to go to come to clean, to paint whatever we needed."

"I felt like it was my home that was personally vandalized," says volunteer Kimberly Spencer.

High school senior Kimberly Spencer grew up going to church here until her family moved up north. She drove 2 hours from Prescott Valley to help clean.

"I just really felt the need to come and help out and God bless my teachers by letting me come down here and miss school today."

Volunteers donated food, water, money and their time. They worked side by side. In a few hours, all of the graffiti had been cleaned up.

"It's pretty amazing that this many people would respond in the community and in the church this quickly," says Riddle.

Goodyear police are still looking for the vandals. They're asking for anyone with information to give them a call.
