Suspected coyote attacks in Warrenton

WARRENTON, Va. -

It has happened at least twice in just two weeks. A person and a dog attacked by a coyote in Fauquier County.

It was very early in the morning and still dark outside. Estelle Fredo was returning from walking her son to the school bus stop when suddenly something came up behind her.

“I heard the gravel, the leaves and stuff moving,” she said. “It just came running and it jumped up here and bit and then jumped my leg and bit.

“I was hollering, ‘Help, get away.’ Everything I could,” she added.

Fredo managed to stumble inside her house.

“I didn't really know it really bit my leg until I got in the house and the blood was coming down,” Fredo said.

Her husband rushed to help.

“He put a bandana around it to stop it so I could get to the hospital,” she said.

Two weeks later, she still has an elastic bandage on it. You can still see where the animal's tooth punctured her chest.

Her kids say she was so black and blue, she looked like an alien.

Speaking of aliens, at first, Fredo didn’t know what the creature was.

“Probably 60, 65 pounds. It was big. That's why I thought at first it could have been a dog,” said Fredo.

But based on other activity in the area, authorities now believe it was a coyote. The Fauquier County Sheriff's Office has set up some cages to help catch coyotes near her home on Lee Highway in Warrenton. She is scared and worries about the kids.

Two weeks later, the stitches are out, but she still has a lot of healing to do -- her body and her mind.

“I just look around for every noise I hear, especially with the leaves and stuff falling. It just makes me think there's something else coming,” Fredo said.
