NJ Court Agrees To Allow Same-Sex Marriages Monday

TRENTON, N.J. -

Same-sex couples in New Jersey will be able to marry beginning next week.

A lower court ruled same-sex weddings must be allowed starting Monday. And the state Supreme Court on Friday denied a request from Gov. Chris Christie's administration for a delay.

Christie wanted the justices to first decide whether same-sex marriage should be legal.

The court will hear arguments on that in January.

Several New Jersey towns are already taking marriage license applications from same-sex couples.

In a statement, Christie's office says, "While the governor firmly believes that this determination should be made by all the people of the state of New Jersey, he has instructed the Department of Health to cooperate with all municipalities in effectuating the order of the superior court under the applicable law."

Thirteen states and the District of Columbia allow same sex marriage. Delaware is among them.

New Jersey would become the 14th state to have legal same-sex marriage.

In Pennsylvania, state law bans same-sex marriage.
