Vigil Held For Girl Who Died From Asthma Complications In School

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A silent vigil is held to remember the little girl who died of an asthma attack on September 25th that began at Bryant Elementary School.

Sixth grader Laporisha Massey's parents believe that if a nurse was on duty at the school, she may not have died.

A nurse is only on duty twice a week at Bryant because of the school district budget crisis.

On September 25th, Massey had her asthma attack at the end of the school day. A teacher called her father, Daniel Burch, to ask what to do. Burch assumed that the call was from the school nurse, so he told the teacher that he would take care of it. By the time the girl got home, he realized how dire the situation was. She later passed out when he drove her to the hospital and died at CHOP
