"It's a river..." that's how one resident calling 911 described Formosa Avenue, just north of Santa Monica, in West Hollywood.
A water main break at about 1:30 covered the street with rushing water, which knocked over motorcycles, took bumpers off vehicles, and flooded at least one underground garage and an apartment lobby.
DWP workers rushed in to stop the water, it is their pipe that burst, which was built back in the 30's. "It's old" explained one of the workers, confirming it is the same pipe that had another break just a block away, last year.
When the water was finally turned off, the ground above it was sucked into the pipe, creating what was described as a "void" (looking to the untrained eye like a sinkhole). The water was turned off for residents on Formosa Avenue, from Fountain to Santa Monica boulevard - all in all about 60 homes, but there were no evacuations.
In terms of damage, at least one vehicle was towed, as was a motorcycle that was completely submerged in the muck. Not as bad as last time, commented several residents, "but bad enough"
DWP hopes to have the pipe fixed before tomorrow, maybe even before midnight.
