Rasdavid Lagarde's confession wasn’t the only surprising revelation coming out of his court appearance Wednesday for the alleged killing of Howard University student Omar Sykes.

Sykes and a friend were attacked after leaving the Fourth of July fireworks and a bar in the U Street corridor when they were followed. Police say Sykes was shot and his friend pistol-whipped by two suspects in the 700 block of Fairmont Street in Northwest D.C.

Court documents say Lagarde told detectives he and his friend were trying to rob Sykes and his buddy, but there was a tussle with Sykes and the gun went off.

Investigators say they also discovered that a neighborhood crew is responsible for a number of similar violent robberies. Police say they have identified some of those suspects.

People who live in the area said they felt safe. Some Howard students say they now intend to be more aware of their surroundings.
