Trucking company Schneider National to host 3 job fairs in Gary

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One trucking company is turning to the city of Gary for help in filling dozens of vacancies. It's all part of the city's new day new jobs initiative to bring work to Gary.

There are at least 50 positions to fill and a big-time bonus for any truck drivers with at least six months experience. Training is also available for applicants with no money, no experience but a desire to work in an industry ready to hire.

"We know that trucking, freight forwarding and logistics is in some ways the future of Gary from an economic development perspective," says Economic Development Director Forest Hayes.

Gary's Economic Director Forest Hayes says the city's unemployment rate is 30 percent -- that's more than triple the national average.

Hoping to tackle that staggering statistic, the city has partnered with Schneider National to host three job fairs before the end of the year.

"So how do we get our citizens involved and also provide them with work opportunities?" asks Hayes. "We've got to connect with those trucking entities that have opportunities and actually train our Gary people to step into those jobs when they become available."

34-year-old Khadijah Muhammed, a mother of four who was laid off seven months ago and 45-year-old Andre Johnson, who lost his job in August, plan to attend Thursday's job fair and say getting hired would be life changing.

"Wow, just a lot more opportunities, being able to do more for a growing family," says Muhammed.

"I'll be able to get better career jobs, things of that nature so I feel pretty good about that," Johnson says of the opportunity.

As one of the nation's largest truckload carriers, Schneider is offering a $5,000 sign-on bonus for over the road drivers.

"There's always a demand for truck drivers," explains John Gerth, division manager of Schneider National. "We have the same demand as the industry and so we need to always identify good, qualified, CDL truck drivers."

Muhammed and Johnson received training and their commercial driver's license though Work One, a federally funded non-profit organization providing job skills and resources.

"It could run between $3,000 and $4,000 for training cost and so many people, there's no way they can pay that," Work One's Center Manager Alfred Hughes says. "They're struggling from week to week, trying to pay rent and buy food so this really is a golden opportunity for someone who is really motivated."

The first job fair is Thursday.
