PHOENIX -

Corina Martinez is facing animal cruelty charges after police found her dog chained to a doorknob. The chain was so short the dog was basically hanging from its neck, her hind legs barely touching the floor.

The dog was severely malnourished. Skin and bones.

This is video of Ryder a few weeks after being rescued. You could see her ribs and she was almost didn't survive.

But today, she is full of energy and making a remarkable recovery.

She's no longer in critical condition.

"She had been completely starved, she was found hanging from a doorknob. She couldn't put her front paws on the ground. She weighed 24 pounds when she came in and now she's up to 38 pounds," says Ashliegh Goebel, Arizona Humane Society.

"She's been able to put on some weight and she's really come out of her shell too. She was really down in spirits when she first came into our shelter and now her personality is starting to bubble up to the surface. She's not out of the woods, we want her to gain more weight."

Goebel says it will be about 3 to 4 weeks until Ryder is ready for adoption.

"She does have a couple of things, we are going to work with her and train with her, but we're dedicated to her to make sure she's well-rounded... She's a very sweet dog."
