D.C. police have arrested 26-year-old Rasdavid Lagarde of Northeast D.C. in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Howard University student, Omar Sykes.

Lagarde is charged with first-degree murder while armed. He was taken into custody when officers carried out a warrant for his arrest at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday morning in Northwest.

Detectives believe Lagarde and an accomplice attempted to rob Sykes and a friend as they walked along the 700 block of Fairmont Street this past Fourth of July. It happened around 11:30 p.m. just steps from Sykes' home and across the street from the Howard University campus.

Sykes' friend was assaulted during the incident and received non-life threatening injuries.

Sykes, a popular marketing major and fraternity member who loved art and photography, was shot and killed.

His sister, Jamilia Sykes, said of the assailants, "We hope they understand the magnitude and impact of their actions, the consequences and the impact it's had on all of our lives."

Police believe Lagarde was the shooter in the case. The search for the second suspect continues.
