WASHINGTON -

D.C. police say a 29-year-old Maryland man was shot on the street in Columbia Heights. He had just finished his shift at a popular 14th Street restaurant, and the owners are now making a plea to the public for help finding the gunman.

It all happened around 11 p.m. Sunday night near the corner of 14th Street and Spring Road. According to the police report, the victim flagged officers down in the intersection. He was able to tell them that a man walked up to him demanding money. When he answered that he didn't have any, the man pulled out a gun and shot him in the stomach.

The victim had just finished his shift at Posto Restaurant, about two miles away, along the up-and-coming 14th Street Corridor.

Owner Massimo Fabbri says he has undergone several hours of surgery, but is expected to survive.

"I was capable of speaking to him through somebody putting the phone to his ear,” said Fabbri. “I reassured him he's part of our family. He's been working with us over 10 years now. It's a tragedy, a catastrophe. We hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. Our call to the community: if anyone saw something, please report it to the police."

According to the police report, there is just one suspect. The description is vague.

The victim, who FOX 5 is not identifying, is also a long-time employee of Fabbri's F Street restaurant, Tosca.
