Detroit Police Dept. switches to 8-hour shifts

The Detroit Police Department begins running on 8-hour shifts Monday, instead of the 12-hours shifts officers have been working for more than a year.

Police Chief James Craig says the longer hours and smaller paychecks have been affecting morale at the stations.

"You say, 'Not only are we going to take ten percent of your pay but we are going to force you to work 12-hour shifts.' That's a recipe for a decline in morale and that's why you see things turning around. And as I've often times said, when morale goes up crime goes down," Craig tells Fox 2's Roop Raj.

Craig says the department is continuing to work on ways to improve services, and believes this change in hours will help.
