Redskins LB Kehl, LS Sundberg out for the season

ASHBURN, Va. -

The struggling special teams units of the Washington Redskins have lost two key players for the rest of the season.

Linebacker Bryan Kehl tore the ACL in his left knee, and long snapper Nick Sundberg tore the meniscus in his right knee in Sunday's 31-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

In addition, rookie cornerback David Amerson suffered a concussion on a special teams play. Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that Amerson is day-to-day while undergoing tests in accordance with the NFL's concussion protocol.

Kehl's knee buckled while he was covering Dwayne Harris' 86-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter. Sundberg was hurt while covering a punt return in the third quarter. Amerson was hit in the helmet by a blocker while covering Harris' 90-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

Kehl was signed in March to soften the blow when Pro Bowl special teams player Lorenzo Alexander left as a free agent. He leads the team in special teams tackles.

Sundberg signed a four-year deal in the offseason to remain with the Redskins, but this is the second consecutive year he's had a major injury. He missed much of 2012 with a broken left arm.

The Redskins are expected to sign a long snapper within a couple of days as they prepare for next week's game against the Chicago Bears.
