Venezuelan with muscular dystrophy inspires with Chicago Marathon finish

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Thousands of people crossed the finish line at this year's Chicago Marathon. But the person who finished last, Maickel Melamed of Venezuela, just might have the most inspiring story.

A man with muscular dystrophy was the last runner to cross the finish line of the Chicago Marathon, nearly 17 hours after he started the race.

The 38-year-old made it across the finish line of the 26.2-mile race at 1:30 a.m. Monday. About 100 people cheered Melamed on as he completed this heart-warming feat.

The Caracas resident said his message to people is: "If you dream it, make it happen."

Muscular dystrophy is an incurable disease. But Melamed refused to let his condition stop him from running the marathon, Talk about fierce determination.

Melamed started running marathons two years ago and has competed in marathons in Berlin and New York City. His time for the Chicago Marathon was 16 hours and 46 minutes.

The Chicago Marathon winner was Dennis Kimetto of Kenya, who finished the course in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 45 seconds. He set a new course record with his accomplishment.

Congratulations to Maickel! He is an inspiration to all of us.
