CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

An Edgewater man fatally stabbed a 70-year-old woman in their North Side apartment and left the body on the floor in a pool of blood for at least a day, prosecutors said Friday.

Mordecai Faskowitz, 63, of the 1300 block of West Thorndale Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder for killing 70-year-old Marjorie G. Ivy, authorities said. Judge James Brown ordered Faskowitz held without bond on Friday.

Police responded to their apartment about 12:10 p.m. Wednesday after a neighbor complained of a strong odor, authorities said.

The caller told police they had not seen Ivy in a few days, and when officers attempted to enter the unit, Faskowitz refused to let them inside, according to court documents.

Officers were eventually allowed inside, where they found Ivy on the floor in a pool of blood next to a broken knife blade, according to court documents.

Ivy's throat was slit; she was stabbed multiple times; and officers found blood splatter behind her and blood throughout the apartment, prosecutors said.

Faskowitz yelled at the officers to leave and refused to show his hands or get on the floor, prosecutors said.

He then said, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do it. I'm sorry she had to die," according to court documents.

Ivy, who also lived in the home, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy determined she died of multiple stab and incise wounds, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Authorities said she had been dead at least 24 hours when officers arrived and was beginning to decay, according to court documents.

The relationship between the two was not immediately known.

Faskowitz will be back in court Oct. 30.
