SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Monica has tentatively decided to start charging people who use its parks to run commercial fitness classes after complaints from residents that the exercise programs are crowding picnickers and others out of the beachfront city's public spaces.

Under a new city ordinance, the fees will be set on a sliding scale, depending on how many people are enrolled in a particular class. They will begin at several hundred dollars.

The ordinance also bans exercise classes on Sundays from Santa Monica's signature Palisades Park.

The measure, passed by a 5-1 vote Tuesday night, requires a second reading before it becomes law.

It comes after months of complaints from Palisades Park users that yoga, cardio and other fitness classes held there daily are crowding the ocean-front park and damaging its landscape.
