Boxing gym director sentenced to stealing money from DC

Posted: Updated:

The former director of a D.C. boxing gym and youth center was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for stealing money from the D.C. government. Keely Thompson admits to taking more than $200,000 for his own personal use but also says he gave cash kickbacks to a member of the D.C. City Council.

Thompson opened his gym for at risk youth with money from the D.C. government – more specifically, earmarks from the City Council that kept the program running. But he admits a lot of that money went into his pocket and was lost gambling in casinos.

Thompson also has another story that the government says it can’t confirm. He says he gave an unnamed D.C. City Council member $50,000 in kickbacks. He says, “The least I ever gave him was 350 but I gave him 6,000, 7,000, 10,000, you know".

Prosecutors in court said they investigated Thompson’s claim but couldn't prove it. And they admitted Thompson agreed to wear a wire but he never did.

Thompson says, "The first time I ever gave him a kickback I wanted to give him a check, but he wouldn't accept that".

After being sentenced, Thompson said the council member took the money for one main reason. He said, “It was greed, for some people it's never enough money for people, you understand, it's what he wanted back is what he got back".

In court, prosecutors told the judge that the same council member who went to the authorities with information about Thompson was stealing money from the program is the same council member Thompson claims took the kickbacks.
