Uribe Had ‘Em Right Where He Wanted ‘Em

Posted: Updated:

It was a home run that shook Chavez Ravine and will go down as one of the great Dodger moments.

A two-run bolt of lightning that gave Los Angeles a 4-3 lead and ultimately the game and the series versus Atlanta.

But how did Juan Uribe get to that magical moment in time?

Remember, a couple of failed bunt attempts gave Uribe a two-strike count.

Certainly a tough situation for any batter and not surprisingly, Uribe also struggled in two-strike counts… at least during the regular season.

This year the 34-year-old Dominican was a .199 hitter when facing any kind of two-strike count. And with his all-or-nothing swing, Uribe actually struck out 44 percent of the time in those situations.

Before the home run, Uribe in this year's division series had 15 total at bats and amazingly, nine times he faced a two strike count.

And in those nine at bats, he stayed on pace with his regular season numbers and struck out 44 percent of the time.

A low batting average and a high strikeout rate; sounds like a great situation for poor Atlanta reliever David Carpenter doesn't it?  But little did Carpenter realize that Uribe apparently had ‘em right where he wanted ‘em.

Because in this particular series, Uribe was extraordinarily efficient with two strikes, collecting as many hits, four, as he did strikeouts.  Meaning his batting average with two strikes this series was an eye-popping .444.

And, oh, did we mentioned this?  That all-or-nothing swing we talked about, did get it all a number of times this year.  Half of Uribe's 12 long balls during the regular season actually came with two strikes.

Uribe's fifth hit in his 10th two-strike at bat this series certainly showed us he isn't looking for any safety swings no matter what the count is.

So maybe we shouldn't be surprised that Uribe's wand cast a spell at the Magic Castle, a spell that turned Carpenter into the loneliest man in the world and sent Dodger Stadium into a goose bump-inducing frenzy.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
