Young Man's Commitment To Peace Pays Off Big

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A South Philadelphia young man's commitment to peace is paying off in a big way.

Wei Chen, 22, is one of the finalists in the "Peace First Prize" contest, and it's earned him a $50,000 fellowship.

Chen fought violence at his alma mater, South Philadelphia High School, back in 2009. Asian-American students were harassed, beaten and bullied in South Philadelphia High School, leading to a national outcry. Chen organized and lead demonstrations protesting violence against the Asian-American students, which brought the issue to light and led to community involvement and national attention.

"I feel very, very excited and it's just really amazing because before I received this grant I, you know, had a hard time finding a job," Chen said.

Chen says he was at a crossroads between family obligations and personal aspirations.

He calls the achievement "life-changing."

Wei was on Good Day along with his mentor Helen Gym. Wei talked about his personal experiences dealing with violence the first few weeks he arrived in the Philadelphia area from China, and how that prompted him to learn how to organize and stand up for himself and other victims.
