Police arrest 8 House members at immigration rally in DC

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

In the midst of the government shutdown, a large immigration reform rally was held on the National Mall Tuesday. U.S. Capitol Police ended up arresting about 200 activists, including at least eight Democratic members of the House.

Organizers of "Camino Americano" are trying to get House Republicans to vote on a stalled immigration reform bill that would create a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

Representatives of the social policy organization Center for Community Change and The Associated Press witnessed the arrests of Reps. John Lewis, D-Ga.; Luis Gutiérrez, D-Ill.; Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz.; Keith Ellison, D-Minn.; Joseph Crowley and Charles Rangel, both D-N.Y.; Al Green, D-Texas; and Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill. They were charged with "crowding, obstructing and incommoding."

Several of the lawmakers spoke with FOX 5 after being released from police custody hours later.

Rep. Ellison says, "I think if the speaker would put an immigration bill on the floor, we could pass it, but he won't do it."

Opponents criticized the National Park Service for allowing the rally to take place on the Mall while it is closed during the shutdown.

The Park Service said it was honoring the group's First Amendment rights.
