Syracuse St. neighbors want illegal dumping to end

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

"It is what it is. Welcome to the ghetto."

Michael Lemle has lived on Syracuse Street in Detroit for three years - a street that is full of abandoned houses and blight. The city tore two of the houses down but many still stand, and now another problem is piling up: garbage.

"All you have to do is come here about 5 in the morning and you'll catch a bunch of trucks dropping tires," Lemle tells Fox 2's Amy Lange.

You can see a sample of the trash piles in the video player above. The piles are full of tires, furniture, bags of garbage, TVs and computer monitors.

"You want to leave but you've got no money, you gotta stay where you're at and make the best of it," Lemle says.

A young mother of two, Cosandra Conner, tells us it's too dangerous for her kids to go outside and play.

Those who still live in the neighborhood hope to see clean-up efforts like those taking place in other parts of the city, and they hope to see it soon. A spokesperson for Mayor Dave Bing tells us two more houses are approved for demolition, but no timeline has been given.

As for the illegal dumping, the Department of Public Works is now aware of the problem.

The case was originally about workplace discrimination. Now it's dragged on for more than a decade despite the case appearing to be one that the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation can't win.
