Proposed I-11 highway would connect Phoenix-Las Vegas

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Phoenix and Las Vegas are the only two major metropolitan areas that do not have a direct highway connecting them. But that could change with Interstate 11.

The proposed I-11 freeway would connect the valley to Sin City and would eliminate the use of most of US 93, currently the only way to get to Vegas from the valley.

It would improve tourism and trade for both cities. Long term, the highway could stretch from Mexico to Canada.

The project has been approved, but we're a ways away from any groundbreaking.

The Arizona and Nevada departments of transportation will host a series of five public meetings this month to present the routes being considered for Interstate 11.

The first is Tuesday night at the Avondale City Council Chambers.
