Police, supporters send off former Marine attacked during run raising money for vets

Posted: Updated:

A former Marine whose cross-country run was interrupted when he was attacked during a stop in Wilmington is back on the road.

The News-Journal reports (http://delonline.us/15hlKuR) that the sendoff Monday morning for Brendan O'Toole included a pipe band playing the Marine Corps hymn and dignitaries including Lt. Gov. Matt Denn and Wilmington City Council president Theo Gregory. About 40 law enforcement officers and others accompanied O'Toole on a three-mile run through downtown.

The 26-year-old Alexandria, Va., man's "Run for Veterans" from southern California to Maine aims to raise money to support veterans and their families. His effort was interrupted last week when he was assaulted on Market Street, leaving him with a concussion and taking him off the road for days.
