Officials: Dogs attack student at Atlanta school

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Authorities are on the lookout for two dogs they say attacked a student at the New Schools at Carver in Atlanta on Monday.

The high school was briefly placed on lockdown after the two dogs attacked the student at a ball field.

The victim, identified as 16-year-old Azarius Lowe, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, according to Atlanta Public Schools officials. The 10th-grader was eating his lunch when he was attacked, authorities said.

The victim's father, Arthur Stevenson, told FOX 5's Kaitlyn Pratt that his son was being treated for bites to his face and arms. He said his son underwent surgery on Monday.

"He's recovering a little bit. He's gotten through surgeries. He's a fighter, he's strong," said Stevenson.

Initial reports suggested that a second person had been attacked, but school officials said later information indicated that only one student was bitten.

APS officials confirmed that the school, which is located at 1275 Capitol Avenue SW, was placed on lockdown due to dogs on the property. That lockdown was lifted by 2:40 p.m.

The dogs were last seen headed towards Pryor Street and the Villages at Carver YMCA area, according to Fulton Animal Services.

Fulton County Animal Services officials said they set up traps to catch the dogs. If caught, the dogs will be tested for rabies. They are asking citizens to be cautious and not to approach the animals if they encounter them.

There has been some confusion as to the breed of the dogs. School officials said that witnesses described the dogs as looking like pit bulls, while animal services officials referred to the dogs as Rottweilers.
