Drag Racing May Be The Cause Of Six Car Pile-up on RTE 301
BRANDYWINE, Md. -
Charges are pending in the six vehicle accident on Route 301 in Prince George's County Sunday that sent 11 people to the hospital.
Police say the 23 year old driver of a Mercury Marauder with a 17 year old passenger in the car was speeding in the Northbound lanes near Clymer Drive.
Investigators say he lost control, crossed the median, and slammed head on into a truck heading southbound. Both the Mercury driver and his passenger were airlifted to the hospital. Nine others were rushed by ambulance to the hospital, including several children.
Lon Colbert who was riding in the one of the cars that was hit and ended up in a ditch, says police told him the Mercury was drag racing.
"That's what police informed us, they were drag racing and lost control and hit us," Colbert says.
Accident Victim Leonard Jones says he also heard it was a drag race.
"They were definitely moving fast... and everything else happened even faster, "Jones says.
Route 301 reopened just after 8 p.m. No names are being released just yet. The investigation continues.
