Alleged sexual assault in Marygrove College dorm

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

An alleged sexual assault occurred in a residence hall at Marygrove College around 1 a.m. Friday. Both the victim and the person accused of the assault are Marygrove students.

Police do have the suspect in custody, and that person is suspended and banned from the campus. A second person is also suspended from campus during the investigation, as it is alleged this person was nearby and may have witnessed the alleged assault taking place.

The school's president released a note informing everyone of the incident. You can read that note in full below.

Students on campus say they are concerned about their safety. "It was a little frightening because - I'm a senior here - so in my four years that I've been here, I have never heard of a sexual assault scandal that's occurred here. So, the first time that that's happened, it's a little frightening," Kristen Jolly tells Fox 2's Ron Savage.

Yet other students don't know what to think of the whole ordeal just yet. "It's not always as it seems, and I think people should really know the truth before they just try to throw something on someone," a student who goes by "Chai" says. "People need to figure out the truth."

The Catholic college has been around since 1927. The 53-acre campus sits near W. McNichols and Cherrylawn.

This message was sent to all students, faculty and staff from President David Fike:

"The Office of Campus Safety & Security has been notified that a possible sexual assault occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. this Friday morning, October 4, in the campus residence hall. Both the victim and alleged perpetrator are resident students. We are deeply concerned about the victim and the College is providing assistance to her and her family. The alleged perpetrator is in police custody and has been suspended and banned from the College pending an investigation. A second student who was in physical proximity of the incident has also been suspended pending an investigation. Please be assured that all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff have been taken. While the alleged perpetrator is in custody and we have no specific information indicating a generalized or continuing threat to campus safety, the college has increased its security presence. Meetings with residence hall students are scheduled for today to address concerns as well as to review safety and security measures. Additional meetings and information will take place over the coming days and weeks to assure that the entire student body has the same opportunity to have concerns addressed as well as to review safety and security measures. In addition, confidential counseling is being offered to all students, faculty, and staff."
