PHOENIX -

Do you love your dog? Maybe you want to help other pups in need? There is a way to give back -- by letting your dog donate its blood to help other animals.

And a valley clinic is looking for doggie donors.

Meet Sydney. She is a 3-year-old pit bull mix and she is helping save lives here at the Emergency Animal Clinic in north Phoenix.

Sydney is the first in a new pilot program called "Canine Blood Heroes," led by veterinarian Adam Petersen.

He's come to the valley to help train veterinary technicians on how to take blood donations from our four-legged friends.

"The way that we do it in humans is that we match blood types. We look for the universal donors," says Petersen.

The clinic needs local dogs as donors, but some dogs are more suited than others for donations -- breeds like greyhounds, boxers, Doberman and pit bulls.

"Those breeds are more likely to be universal donors. Those breeds that fit have a higher percentage of universal donors."

Currently there are three other locations around the nation. But Petersen says Phoenix is in desperate need of its own blood bank.

"Every drop of blood that is used in Phoenix today has come from Idaho or California. It all crosses state lines."

A problem he is looking to correct. So how many people is he looking to have show up to Saturday's blood typing event?

"I would love 100. That is my pie in the sky goal."
