WASHINGTON -

Witnesses say a man doused himself in gasoline and set himself on fire Friday afternoon at a major public area in the nation's capital.

It happened just after four this afternoon on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Twitter user Vanessa Sink saw it happen and said, "I didn't see him light the match, but I saw the flames engulf his body. It was surreal."

D.C.'s fire department says the man has life-threatening injuries. He was airlifted out of the area.

No one else was hurt.
