Student catches fire at high school in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

A high school student in Douglas County caught fire during a demonstration on Thursday night, officials confirm.

The incident took place around 7 p.m. in a hallway at Chapel Hill High School. A group of Advanced Placement students were attempting to identify chemicals by the color of its flame when something went wrong.

Douglas County Sheriff's Department Major Tommy Wheeler said that his son, Will, used his letterman's jacket to help extinguish the flames on the female student.

"It's an AP program demonstration and he was helping them with the demonstration, talking to other students about joining the AP program and he said he heard a boom and he turned and there was a big ball of fire. He ran and grabbed the fire blanket and put it on top of her," Wheeler said.

A female teacher at the school also jumped in to help.

"The teacher…was standing immediately beside her… grabbed her, put her on the ground and started rolling and patting the fire out with her bare hands," Wheeler said.

The student was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with reportedly second-degree burns, Wheeler said.

Douglas County Schools issued a statement on Friday saying, "It has been reported to us that she suffered burns on about 25 percent of her upper body. She remains in the hospital for treatment and reported to us that she is expected to recover fully."
