Assistant Prosecutor Faces Obstruction, False Report Charges

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A Philadelphia assistant district attorney finds herself on the wrong side of the law.

She's accused in a very strange plot involving a love triangle that went sour. What authorities claim she did for an ex-boyfriend before and after they broke up has her in hot water.

High-ranking A.D.A. Lynn Nichols spent her day behind closed doors with detectives Friday.

The veteran prosecutor has been charged with obstruction of justice and filing false reports in connection with an alleged scheme to have a Philadelphia police officer remove her then boyfriend's car from stolen car status in crime computers.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's office handled the investigation because Nichols is the second in command in D.A. Seth Williams' Homicide Unit.

The D.A. suspended Nichols. She has now resigned.

Williams said Nichols "... has had a long and successful career ... It is with both professional and personal sadness that I am making this announcement today."

Sources say Nichols got caught up in a year-long scheme during which she allegedly did her then boyfriend a favor getting the car removed from stolen status, then helped his former girlfriend get it returned to stolen status as an act of revenge against him when they broke up.

Sources say the veteran police officer who allegedly agreed to help her is now being investigated by the police department's Internal Affairs Bureau.

Nichols allegedly made a 9-1-1 call reporting the car stolen again and signed a police report claiming to be the ex-girlfriend.

Defense attorney Brian McMonagle refused to comment on the charges against Nichols. Sources say because both charges are misdemeanors. Nichols could be admitted to a program that would allow her record to be expunged in a year, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.
