Plans announced for Angels' Night volunteer effort

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) -- Officials are asking Detroit residents to patrol their neighborhoods over the coming three-day Halloween period to help prevent arsons, especially in vacant houses.

Angels' Night plans were announced Thursday by Mayor Dave Bing. The volunteer effort has been credited with radically reducing the number of intentionally set fires at the end of each October.

The observance this year runs Oct. 29-31. Teams of residents, block clubs, community groups and churches will conduct street patrols. Some volunteers also will watch specific vacant structures.

A curfew for minors also will be put in place.

The program is a long-running response to what used to be known as Devil's Night, the day before Halloween. In 1984, the city had more than 800 fires during the period.

Last year, 93 fires were reported.
