CPS grade school to begin sex ed as early as kindergarten

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

LaSalle II Magnet School in Wicker Park is going to begin teaching about reproduction and safety as early as kindergarten.

Chicago Public Schools are planning to have a new sex education policy in place by 2016.

But not everyone in the community thinks sex education at age 5 or 6 is a good idea.

LaSalle II's principal said the lessons will be age-appropriate. The grade school is already in the first stages of implementing the policy.

The kindergarten through fourth grade curriculum will focus on anatomy, reproduction, healthy relationships and personal safety. CPS said that younger students will focus on family, feelings and appropriate and inappropriate touching.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Daniela Schreier joined Good Day Chicago Thursday morning to address whether this new policy will negatively affect the children in any way, and how they might benefit from it.

LaSalle II had a meeting this week and parents said it was a very good exchange of ideas. The parents never want to be blind-sided. They want to know what's going to be discussed under these new policies.

Schools will be required to teach 300 minutes of sex and health education to K-4th grade students. Students in 5th – 12th grade will have 675 minutes.

Chicago students typically go on a field trip at the Robert Crown Center for "the talk." Parents can have their kids opt out.

When you say sex ed, parents jump to conclusions. But health officers say this education will be age appropriate. They will be covering issues like inappropriate touches for safety sake. Many parents we talked to this morning say they approve.

"It really is going to depend on what they are going to be rolling out to kindergarteners. I would imagine the same program they are running out to the younger children won't be the same as they are using for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders," one CPS mother said. "This is a wakeup call you need to start having these discussions earlier at home."

Parents at LaSalle say they are very involved with their school, with their children and some other things involved in that new policy. There also talk about identifying different kinds of family support because they have diverse families in awful Chicago Public Schools.

All schools have until 2016 to get their programs in place. They will have to have two instructors approved by CPS to do this.
