Soldier killed in parachute accident is identified

Posted: Updated:

FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) - Coroner's officials identified a soldier killed in a parachuting accident as a 19-year-old native of the Dominican Republic.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan tells The Augusta Chronicle that Mario Jekov was practicing diving with team members when another soldier accidentally drifted beneath his parachute and took the wind out of it.

Fort Benning officials said the accident occurred during the third week of Airborne School at the Army base in west Georgia.

Bryan says the soldier fell between 120 and 150 feet and was pronounced dead at the Midtown Medical Center.

Officials say the incident is under investigation.

Fort Benning is just south of Columbus.
