District of Columbia opens online health exchange

WASHINGTON -

The District of Columbia's new online health insurance marketplace has opened and thousands have created accounts.

The executive director of the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority, Mila Kofman, says that as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, more than 110 employers and thousands of individuals created accounts. Tuesday was the first day employers and individuals could log on and set up accounts at dchealthlink.com, the online marketplace website.

Individuals have a choice of more than 30 health care coverage options. Kofman says that as of 3 p.m., 3,356 accounts for individuals and families had been set up and nearly 400 coverage applications were submitted.

Small businesses in Washington have a choice of 267 plans. Kofman says of the more than 100 business accounts created, a total of 32 employers uploaded employee information.
