Playboy says UMD is a top ten party school

Posted: Updated:

The University of Maryland has landed in the top ten on a list it probably wished it hadn't.

Playboy Magazine has ranked it number ten on its list of top party schools.

"Oh great. That's where my daughter goes." Julie Youmans says.

Youmans says she'd rather have her daughter focus of academics rather than alcohol and parties.

"If I'm paying for it, my kid's not supposed to be there to party." Youmans says.

There have been some notorious celebrations on Route One in College Park, like back in 2010 after the men's basketball team defeated Duke.

1500 students and fans poured into the street. But like a lot of campus parties, especially when alcohol's involved, it didn't end nicely.

That's why some UMD officials aren't thrilled with making the top ten, especially after a huge spike in alcohol poisoning cases last year.

Forty students had to be transported to the hospital after drinking too much.

So far this year, 20 have needed medical care after binge drinking.

"I'm frankly not surprised, Kavita Hundal says. "We're quite the party school."

Student Obi Igbo says he doesn't party much, but sees a lot of kids who do.

"I would walk around to get food and you would see all kinds of things of Route One," Igbo says.

Mark Russell says, "I think it's awesome. I think if you can balance partying and school work, more power to you."

University of Maryland officials have been working hard to reduce the rite of passage, and with alcohol transports cut in half so far this year, it seems to be working.

"We definitely have programs like alcohol edu to try and draw you away from it, or at least teach you how to drink correctly," student Courtney Bates says.

A lesson UMD student Jessica Youmans has taken to heart.

"I don't really think about it that much--partying. I'm getting a good education even though it's a party school,"

Jessica Youmans says.

Here's Playboy's top ten list of party schools for 2012.
