NJ Same-Sex Couple 'Excited To Be Treated Like Any Other Family'

Posted: Updated:
DEPTFORD, N.J. -

All over New Jersey, same-sex couples are celebrating a ruling that could have them walking down the aisle in just a few weeks.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce spoke to one of those couples Friday night. They are very excited about the ruling that came down.

Although they understand that the Attorney General's office plans to appeal the decision, they plan to keep on fighting for equality.

"Just excited to be treated like any other family," Russell said.

The news that a state judge ruled gay marriage is legal in the Garden State was a big win for Catherine Kolodzey and Kristen Russell of Deptford.

"This is Alex. She's 10 months. Absolute best thing in our lives," Kolodzey said.

The couple was married in Delaware last summer. They also have a civil union in New Jersey.

The fact that their home state may soon recognize their marriage means even more to them now that they're raising a child.

"We don't want her to have to explain anything, you know? It should just be that, 'These are our parents, and they're married, just like yours are," Russell said.

When tiny Alex squealed with pleasure, Kolodzey said kiddingly, "That's it! That's how she feels. Right? You don't feel any different, do you?"

After the ruling came down, Gov. Chris Christie released a statement saying that he has always wanted the issue of marriage equality to be up to the voters and that "since the legislature refused to allow the people to decide expeditiously we will let the Supreme Court make this constitutional determination."

Christie refused to answer questions while at an event in Ewing on Friday.

But his plan to appeal the decision did not surprise the Garden State Equality organization. The group says it's fighting on and has confidence that marriage equality is inevitably in New Jersey's future.

"This is the first step in the process," said the group's John Otto. "Like I said, there's an appeal in place. We're just continuing to work with legislature. There's going to be more to come. This isn't the end of the road. And we expect that by the end of the year marriage equality in the state of New Jersey, whether it's through the legislation or litigation"

The judge's ruling states that same sex couples can marry as early as Oct. 21. If the attorney general's office appeals, marriage equality in the state of New Jersey could be put on hold.
