TREVINO TRIAL: Defense offers alternative theory in Steger's death

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

As prosecutors wrap up their case in the Jeffery Trevino murder trial, there's a big twist. The defense offering up a possible alternative theory in the murder of Kira Steger.

This was something of a bombshell that no one saw coming to end week two of the Jeffery Trevino trial. For the first time, the defense offered up an alternative theory, an alternative motive, and potentially even an alternative killer.

While cross-examining prosecution witness, retired St. Paul Police Sgt. John Wright, Jeffery Trevino's defense attorney, John Conard, introduced a photo of items that were found inside Kira's purse after she went missing.

Inside the purse was a small bag of marijuana. Conard asked the Sergeant if he knew where Kira got the drugs. He did not.

Then he asked if drug dealers and drug houses can be dangerous. The sergeant said yes.

The court then recessed for the weekend with this marijuana drug use issue hanging in the air. Obviously, it's a possible alternative theory for the defense just as they are about to get the case. No one seemed to see this coming.

I had a chance to talk to the Steger family; Jay Steger acknowledges that Kira had tried marijuana. But the drug was not found in her system when her body was recovered. He felt the defense tactic today was "a desperate attempt to discredit Kira." The Steger family is very upset.

The police sergeant returns to the witness stand when we resume testimony Monday morning. The defense still must decide whether to put Jeffery Trevino on the stand in his own defense.
