Government shutdown, Qatar Airlines, social media in the news: Chat Room

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Friday's Chat Room, former White House insider Laura Schwartz, Sun-Times Splash editor Susanna Negovan and Good Day Chicago anchor Anna Davlantes discussed what you need to be concerned about regarding a possible government shutdown as the budget battle continues.

The ladies also talked about how Qatar Airlines is under fire for contractually requiring female employees to obtain permission from the company to change their marital status and get married, requiring notification of pregnancy from the date of knowledge and retaining the right to terminate employment from the date of notification.

The ladies then discussed The Guardian columnist Vanessa James' shocking statement, that women are partially to blame for any sexual harassment they may experience in the workplace. She also advised that women should avoid reporting the abuse.

"To progress fully in a career, ability is only part of it - you have to be liked and trusted by your colleagues. A woman who has raised a grievance or complaint (however justified) will no doubt feel vulnerable in the long term because of it," James wrote. "If you do not define your own boundaries then you cannot expect others to be able to either."

The 2013 Metro Chicago Heart Walk is this weekend and Laura Schwartz will be there! The non-competitive walk celebrates people who have made lifestyle changes to live healthier, and encourage others to take the pledge to do the same. The walk also raises money to fund life-saving research and education.

Crain's Chicago Business Director of Social Media and Consulting Tracy Schmidt and marketing and social media consultant Crystal Washington joined the Chat Room to discuss schools monitoring posts students make on social media outlets in an effort to stop cyber-bullying, whether the public has become too obsessed with documenting our experiences rather than actually experiencing them, a California law that forces companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter to delete online information upon minors' request and Washington's new book, "The Social Media Why: A Busy Professional's Practical Guide to Using Social Media Including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Google+ and Blogs for Business."
