The New York City Council is holding a hearing Wednesday on a bill that would ban employers' access to social media of a potential or current employee.
Under the bill, an employer cannot fire an employee who refuses to accept a friend request or hand over logins and passwords.
The same would hold true for prospective employees who would not be penalized for failing to provide the information.
In New Jersey, Gov Chris Christie signed a similar measure into law.
