Jackson, Blagojevich figure pleads guilty

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A 1-time contributor to former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., who was also a figure in scandals related to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich has pleaded guilty in a medical fraud case.

A somber Raghuveer Nayak stood before a federal judge in Chicago as he pleaded guilty to charges he bribed doctors to refer patients to surgery centers he owned.

Combined, the fraud and tax count he pleaded guilty to carry a maximum 23-year prison sentence. His sentencing hearing is set for Jan. 22.

Campaign records indicate the 58-year-old Oak Brook man was once a major campaign contributor in Illinois, giving nearly $500,000 between 2000 and 2008.

His guilty plea followed an announcement earlier Friday he'd cut a plea deal. The agreement short-circuits his trial, which was set to start next month.
