Gender Parties: Cake color reveals baby's sex

PHOENIX -

Remember when you were expecting a baby and you went to the doctor for the 20 week ultrasound? If you wanted to, you could find out if you were expecting a boy or girl.

The ultra sound -- looked like this... the doctor... somehow.. through the tiniest of nuances on an image is able to determine if this small being will grow into a girl or boy.

Some couples want to take the big moment of finding out the sex of their baby and turn it into a much bigger moment by throwing big celebrations called gender parties where everyone finds out the baby's gender at the same time.

If it's a girl your think pink and flowers.  A boy -- maybe blue and sports theme.  But when a couple chooses to have a gender party, the only people who know the sex of the baby are the ultrasound tech who write it down on a piece of paper.  That piece of paper is given to a baker who makes a cut that's either blue or pink!

"We're such family oriented people we thought why not share it with our family and close friends and make a night of it," said Heather Stevens.

Stevens, a mom-to-be, always loved the idea of cutting into a cake in front of her kin.  Her husband Ken Wilk wasn't so sure.

"I didn't really like it because I kinda wanted to know and it seems kind of nerve racking."

The gender party begins with every guest casting their vote and then putting on a blue or pink ribbon.

"I'm kind of thinking it's a girl, but I don't know," said Wilk.

But mom believes it will be blue.

"I just kind of envision that for us on this one, I don't know why," said Stevens.

So does her mother Joy, who's expecting her 11th grandchild.

"I think I'm just thinking boy because we've had a lot of girls lately."

With 40 friends and family members looking on, it was time to cut the cake -- it's a boy!

They bake for all sorts of special occasions from weddings to birthdays, but the baker of this cake says it's an extra special feeling helping a family find out whether they're having a boy or girl.

"You get to be part of a family, part of a community -- every time they celebrate something so it is nice," said Christine Boerner of Karl's Quality Bakery.

The celebration confirmed what this mom-to-be thought from the beginning.

"I can believe it because it was kind of my feeling, but it makes it so real.  That it's actually happening," said Stevens.

Even dad was excited about the party he didn't want to have after learning his name will be carried on.

The baby is due in February.  They are thinking of giving the baby a name that's been passed down through the family.
