Autistic boy dies in Hoschton fire, mother & father escape

HOSCHTON, Ga. -

An autistic young man died in house fire that broke out on Jackson Meadow Drive in Hoschton early Thursday. His stepfather and mother managed to escape and were transported to a hospital.

Little remained of the home when fire crews left the scene about 6 a.m. Flames burned away the roof, proving very powerful despite firefighters reaching the home in about two minutes.

A fire official said, "Our guys went through the window and the mom was screaming, ‘He's in there. He's in there.'"

Firefighters arrived to see the Jackson Meadow Drive home engulfed by fire, with flames showing through the roof. Fire officials say the son was in his bedroom. Firefighters braved the fire and smoke to try to reach the young man, but couldn't locate him.

When the house began to collapse on the firefighters, they retreated and tackled the blaze from the outside. Fire crews took up an offensive stance. Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters went back into the house and found the deceased in a closet.

His mother and stepfather were taken to Athens Regional Hospital, Teichner reports. The woman had suffered burns to her hand and he was taken in for evaluation. The State Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to determine what caused the fire.

A total of three fire departments responded to battle the fire.

The names of the deceased, as well as his mother and stepfather, have not been released.
