WASHINGTON -

Awele Olisemeka was only 24 years old. He was a Nigerian immigrant, who just weeks ago became a naturalized citizen.

Metropolitan police found him unconscious in the 900 block of Madison Street last Saturday around 6 p.m. when they responded to a report of an aggravated assault.

Neighbors say a group of young men had chased him. One Madison Street resident says they threw bricks at him, striking him in the head.

Olisemeka was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he died on Monday.

Family members are too shaken to comment. They say he was an honors student at Coolidge High School, graduated from Delaware State with a degree in computer engineering and was working as a caregiver while he looked for a job in his chosen field.

D.C. police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest.
