BOULDER, Colo. -

A lot of help is arriving in Colorado to help victims of this historic flood.

We talked to someone with the Red Cross who was dispatched out there.

Dave Kurtis has been now deployed for the third time with Red Cross, first to Hurricane Isaac and Sandy -- now Boulder, Colorado.

He says in Colorado, people are devastated and in desperate need of help. Deadly flooding washed away homes, leaving several hundred residents still unaccounted for.

Now hundreds of evacuees are turning to the Red Cross, as volunteers set up shelters. Kurtis is helping coordinate efforts.

"People were hit really hard, some places got up to 22 inches of water. If you were hit by this water you were devastated by it," he said.

Kurtis traveled from Camp Verde to the emergency operations center in Boulder to represent the Red Cross to the local government.

He says at this stage, residents need the basics – water, shelter, and cleaning supplies.

"The houses that weren't destroyed are just full of mud, you are talking a foot of mud throughout the house."

Thirteen Red Cross volunteers from Arizona are on the ground in Colorado -- helping the disaster victims. Kurtis has been there since Saturday.

He says he'll stay at least two weeks -- as long as the Red Cross needs him there.

"It just seems like that's what you need to do. Everyone in the community should give back to everyone in the community, that's what's great about America. That is what being American is about, we help each other out when it's the time of need. We do it because we are fellow citizens and that's all there is to it."

The Red Cross is asking for donations to help get the local residents back on their feet.
