ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

One day after a body was found wrapped in a sheet near a popular recreation trail in St. Louis Park, police announce a man has been arrested for probable cause second-degree homicide in the death of a woman who had a protective order against him.

On Monday, police were called to 5001 Cedar Lake Road after a worker reported what appeared to be a body behind a building located near the railroad and the Cedar Lake Bike Trail.

On Tuesday, investigators confirmed the body was that of an adult woman and there were many apparent injuries consistent with a severe beating, particularly near the victim's face and head.

Detectives say the victim could not be immediately identified, but the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 46-year-old Nerissa Annette Shaw, of Minneapolis, on Tuesday.

After identifying the victim, officers learned 54-year-old Walter Thompson, of Minneapolis, had been in a long and violent relationship with Shaw. In fact, Thompson is currently on probation for violating an order of protection Shaw had secured.

For violating that order, Thompson was convicted of a gross misdemeanor. He paid a $200 fine and served just 5 days in the Hennepin County workhouse.

Officers with the St. Louis Park Police Department worked with Minneapolis police and Hennepin County deputies to search for Thompson on Wednesday. Shortly before 1 p.m., he was arrested at 15 E. Grant St. in Minneapolis without incident.

Thompson is currently in the custody of the St. Louis Park Police Department, but the investigation into Shaw's death remains ongoing. It is still unknown where she was killed, but hours after Thompson's arrest, Hennepin County crime scene investigators were still going through his Loring Towers apartment near the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Charges are expected to be filed within the next few days.

Not only is Thompson currently on probation for violating a restraining order against the victim, but he also has an a criminal history dating back to 1990 that spans at least three Minnesota counties and runs the gamut from disorderly conduct and DUIs to assault and sexual crimes.
