Scott Dixon: We Are A Family Of Racers

Posted: Updated:

Scott Dixon is one of the most successful racers in IndyCar history.  Twice he's won the IZOD IndyCar Championship, plus the Indianapolis 500 in 2008.

But Dixon has gotten into trouble lately.  The IndyCar organization has fined him $30,000 on Friday and placed him on probation through the end of the year for disparaging comments after the Grand Prix of Baltimore.

Last week in Baltimore, Dixon called for race director Beaux Barfield to be fired following a second consecutive frustrating race that affected his championship chances.  Dixon was penalized in Sonoma the previous week when his car made contact with a tire a crew member for Will Power was carrying. The penalty cost Dixon a chance to race for the win, and opinion was split through the paddock as to who was at fault and if race control perhaps should not have penalized anyone.

"Reflecting on it, I shouldn't have been so outspoken," Dixon told The Associated Press. "It was just frustration of a two-week period. For me, I love the sport, I want to see it better and what I did didn't help. My concern is not making things look bad for the series. I love my job and don't want to be doing anything else, and I don't want it to be perceived otherwise. I want to learn from the mistakes we've made."

Dixon explains what happened to Steve Edwards and Maria Sansone on Good Day L.A.

Fun Facts About Scott Dixon:

  • He is a New Zealand motor racer who became the most successful all-time driver in the Indy Racing League (IRL) championship in the United States when he won the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio in August 2009. This took his total to 20 wins.
  • Competing for Chip Ganassi Racing since joining IndyCar, Dixon has won the championship twice, 2003 and 2008, and he won the 92nd Indianapolis 500 in 2008 from pole position.
  • Known as a consistent race finisher, Dixon has twice in his IndyCar career set the record for finishing the highest number of consecutive races, 28, at Watkins Glen in 2005, and again at Mid-Ohio in 2007.
  • Among notable awards won by Dixon are the Jim Clark Trophy (1999, 2001, 2004) and the Bruce McLaren Trophy (2003, 2008). In 2012 he was appointed Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
