Tuesday will mark one year since the deadly shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. Twelve civilian workers were killed by a military contractor at Building 197 on September 16. One of the victims killed in the shooting was Kathy Gaarde. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother, and like 11 other people that day, she simply went to work at the Navy Yard.

When Aaron Alexis went on his rampage inside Building 197 last September 16th, U.S. Park Police played a vital role in bringing the gunfire to a stop -- saving a woman's life and providing crucial intelligence from the air. A year later, four officers are telling their stories and the incredible way in which they obtained the first description of the gunman.

WALDORF, Md. -

Sylvia Frasier, 53, of Waldorf, Md., was an Information Technology Security Manager with the Naval Sea Systems Command until she was gunned down Monday morning at the Washington Navy Yard.

Her family members are in pain and want people to know Aaron Alexis, the accused shooter, took someone precious from them.

Frasier is from a family with five sisters and a brother, who miss her desperately already.

Her brother, Bobbe, says he left work around midday when no one in the family had heard from her after news of the shooting at her job.

He and his sister, Lyn, went to Nationals Park hoping to reunite with Sylvia. The other sisters gathered at their parents' home in Glenarden, watched news accounts on television and prayed with their minister.

At the stadium, Bobbe says they were initially told Sylvia was injured and in a hospital. Hours later, an FBI agent, with a chaplain present, informed them their sister had been killed.

The family says Sylvia always had a smile on her face, and was a generous person who was dedicated to her job.

Marvena Simmonds, Sylvia’s sister, says she has a hole in her heart. But to fill it, she has to forgive.

Wendy Edmonds calls her sister, Sylvia, a jewel.

They say they now must try to console their parents, James Frasier Sr., 88, and Eloise Frasier, 87.
