Just in time for what is sure to be a contentious vote for the next mayor the city of Detroit is getting a new director for the Department of Elections. According to a statement Willie G. Wesley Jr. has been appointed to the position.

Wesley previously held regional election administrator and program management positions and aided in the successful revision of multiple election processes including Washington DC, Broward County, Florida, and Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. Wesley earned his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Michigan Technological University.  He also completed technical school in the U.S. Air Force, along with Air Force Leadership NCO leadership school prior to receiving his degree.

His appointment comes as the city prepares for the November 6 election between Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and former DMC CEO Mike Duggan.

The August 6 primary between the two men was ultimately decided by a state election panel when Wayne County election officials refused to certify the election after members questioned the validity of about 20,000 write-in votes not recorded by Detroit election workers using hash marks.

After weeks of disagreement over who won the race, the bipartisan Board of State Canvassers unanimously approved primary results with 48,716 votes for Duggan and 28,391 votes for Napoleon.
