Train Derails In Paulsboro For 2nd Time In Year

Posted: Updated:

A minor train derailment has been reported in Paulsboro, the Gloucester County town where a major derailment caused a leak and hazardous materials incident last November.

Greenwich Township police say an empty train derailed Monday morning on Billingsport Road. One set of wheels came off the track.

No injuries or leaks are being reported, and there are no evacuations, police said.

Billingsport Road is closed to traffic at this time, and there's no word on when it will reopen.

The National Transportation Safety Board continues its second day of hearings into last year's train derailment. That train was hauling 23,000 gallons of a toxic chemical which spilled out over the Mantua Creek on Nov. 30.

Federal investigators say firefighters and police who raced to the scene after the crash may have done more harm than good by setting up a command post too close to the spill and not having first responders wear breathing apparatus.
